  1. These chapters are a study in contrast between unjust men who inflict vengeance on their enemies and a just king who pursues peace. Where in your life do you most struggle to follow the examples of David and Jesus?

  2. What is God’s providence? How do sightings of providence in David’s story help us to rest when circumstantial relief doesn’t come quickly?

  3. How does David’s posture toward Abner reflect Jesus’ posture toward his people? How does David’s faith in 2 Samuel 3:39 enable us to practice the same gentleness toward those who hurt us?

  4. David recognized Rechab and Baanah as pseudo-redeemers because he knew the True Redeemer. Where do you need the Spirit’s help to look to Jesus instead of yourself or others for redemption?
