In an age when authorities are automatically suspect, Deuteronomy points us in a radically different direction. God’s rule over his people is an exceedingly good thing. Our place in redemptive history may be different than the Israelites’ was on their way to the promised land, but our fundamental need is the same. We need to experience the joy of living in submission to our gracious God. Deuteronomy reveals the goodness of the Lawgiver, exposes our need for a Savior, deepens our wonder at the perfect obedience of Christ, and shows us what it looks like to wholeheartedly follow him.
