Sunday School for Fall 2020
There are many benefits to preaching straight through entire books of Scripture on Sundays. Not only does it help us understand God’s Word in context and prevent us from sticking to pet topics or avoiding controversial subjects, but it also keeps us engaged in biblical theology (interpreting Scripture on its own terms and in its own categories) and gives us a better sense for the big-picture storyline of redemption.
None of that, however, diminishes the value of starting with a specific topic or question and asking what the whole Bible has to say about it. It’s called doing systematic theology. For example, what are the basic truths (doctrines) a Christian needs to understand? If you’re just getting started in knowing and following Jesus, that’s a really important question! Or what are the primary means God uses to help us become more like Jesus? How do we change and what can we do to help others change? These are the topics we are eager to address in two Sunday school classes this fall.
The first class is called, “Basics of Christianity,” taught by Bob Shanks. It’s an 8 week class running from Sunday, Sept 20 - Sunday, Nov 8 in the Seminar Room. If you fit into any of the following categories, you should consider attending.
If you’ve recently become a Christian and are trying to figure out what it means to follow Jesus
If you’re been a Christian for a long time and feel like you’ve drifted from the fundamental practices of our faith
If you’re in a discipleship relationship where you want to know how to equip and care for a new believer
If you’ve grown up in the church and heard a lot of things about Christianity, but want someone to help you focus on the essentials
The second class is called, “How People Change,” taught by Chris Deloglos. It’s a 6 week class running from Sunday, Oct 18 - Sunday, Nov 22 in the Ministry Room. If you fit into any of the following categories, you should consider attending.
If you have a relationship with a friend, spouse, or child who you want to help follow Jesus
If you secretly hope people never tell you about their problems because you have no idea what to say
If you think biblical counseling is for “professionals only”
If you feel trapped or stuck in a pattern of sin and want help
If you feel like why you do what you do is a mystery and wish you had a better grasp of what’s actually going on inside of you
Please join us starting this Sunday for the Basics of Christianity class in the Seminar Room from 8:45-9:45am. We’ll be wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Registration is not required and Spanish translation is available. We hope to see you there!
