extraordinary ordinary moments

The Lord has called his disciples to make disciples by sharing the good news of his salvation! On Sunday February 9, KingsWay member Garrett Rozier challenged us to perceive ordinary moments in life as opportunities to share the gospel.

Pastor Matthew asked me to share opportunities that I have had to share the gospel with those around me, and particularly with those with whom I interact consistently.

Part of my job is to train and lead a sales team at our office. God uses these times of training and development to allow me to get to know folks on a deeper level. Not only do I try to get to know them, but I also want them to learn things about me, in particular the ways that God blesses me through being a member of this church.

I have a coworker named Deshawn who went to church off and on growing up and knows a little bit about church, but I would not say that he is following after the Lord. Because he has some familiarity with the Church, he will occasionally ask me questions about KingsWay and how we might differ from other churches. These have been wonderful times to explain some core church beliefs, but also to connect that with the thing he needs most, the gospel. I had a moment once where he asked me why different church denominations even existed. After all, it’s all supposed to be the same religion, he said. Why does it feel so different, he asked. We were able to have a brief discussion about primary and secondary beliefs about the Bible and their importance. This gave me an opportunity to go into more detail about why the gospel is so important and the explain its unifying power. I shared with him that we must ultimately believe that without Christ we are without hope and face the just punishment for our sin, the wrath of God. However, because Christ lived the perfect life and died in our place, if we confess our sins and believe by faith, we are then no longer under God's wrath, but under His mercy. We are no longer sinners condemned, but we are righteous before God.

After discussing this, I was able to explain that while we may belong to a different denomination than another church, if we believe the same gospel, we have unity that you can find nowhere else in the world. The things we may disagree on do matter, but they do not separate us because our bond in Christ is unbreakable. This led me to invite him to church. In response to this invitation, he said he would like to go some day.

Despite not seeing fruit of a repentant heart yet, God still opens up conversations between us where the gospel can become the focus. I ask that you would pray for the Lord to open Deshawn’s eyes and lead him to repentance.

Additionally, I pray that we would all see the ordinary moments of being at work, taking a walk, talking on the phone, as being the best moments to share the extraordinary power of the Gospel.
