Prayer of Confession:
Father, we come before You today recognizing that You are almighty God, the one who holds the keys to death and Hades. In Your greatness, You open the eyes of the blind and break the chains of captives. Yet we so often turn our eyes away from your face and instead fix them on worldly desires. We crave entertainment, money, food, connection, and fail to look to you as the Giver of all good things. We place our good appearances before pure motivation, escape before sabbath rest, and cling to worry as if it were a right, instead of trusting you to be everything that we need.
Savior, forgive us for the ways that we have sinned against you and others this week. Forgive us for selfishness and pride that has caused to value other things above time with you. Forgive us for the ways that our priorities have been misaligned, for harsh words spoken, and negative thoughts dwelt on.
We ask for your help as we continue here in worship and study. Would you still our hearts as we sing and help us to mean the words. Clear our minds as we open your word. Create in us a clean heart oh God and renew a right spirit within us. Help us to boldly approach the eternal throne and claim all that is now ours through Christ. May we never forget that it is because of Jesus we can come to you in confession and sing to you in praise.

Discussion Questions:
The Pharisees turned something that God designed to show dependence on him into a list of rules they could achieve. Where are there areas in your life that you reduce what God says down to a list of dos and don’ts?
Do you try to minimize offense or maintain social status over proclaiming the truth of the gospel?
Do you read the Bible looking for it to line up with what you want to believe is true, or do you come to Jesus asking him to tell you what is true?
Where are you quick to lean on your own understanding?
In John 9:36 the formerly blind man models the humility of faith that seeks understanding by asking Jesus who the Son of Man is. Where in your life do you need to go to Jesus in humility and ask for understanding?
