PRAYER OF CONFESSION:

Lord, we are grateful that we are gathered here together this morning.  Thankful for your grace and mercy that abounds   Yet, there are so many areas in our life where we have fallen short.   We try to do things on our own will, with our own abilities. We have put our own desires first.   We often become confused and curse you because we feel like you are not listening, yet it is our sin that has hindered our hearts.  Forgive us for loving the things of this world.. We get discouraged and upset when things change.  We put our feelings and our thoughts on the discouragement of changes, instead of acknowledging  your goodness.  Forgive us for our unbelief.  For not believing that you do indeed work everything for our good and your glory.

We have forgotten that the trials in our life should make us want  to draw nearer to you, instead we fall away. We question your goodness. We look at the hard times and become distraught  instead of looking at the gifts we have been given.

 We have become judgemental. Pointing out sin in others.  Easily seeing the spec instead of the plank that is in our own eye.

We have not shown the love of Christ to others the way we ought. We have become selfish in our thinking, selfish in speech and selfish in our actions.

We fear man instead of fearing God.  We look to the approval of others. Instead of glorifying you in all that we say and all that we do. We confess that we have sinned against you in thoughts, words, and actions.. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We humbly repent, have mercy on us and forgive us that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. How have you defined wisdom in your life? Has that definition changed after reading James 3:13-18?

  2. Matthew said that humility toward God will lead to humility toward man. How have you seen this in your own life?

  3. Are you more concerned with what you deserve, have, or want than seeking peace through humility?

  4. What kinds of fruit are your relationships bearing?

  5. What is one area where you have struggled with bitter jealousy or selfish ambition?

  6. You cannot make yourself wise, but Jesus can! Where have you run to God this week with jealousy and ambition?
