The US Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling yesterday on the legality of same-sex marriage in our country. My heart was grieved, and yet not surprised, to witness another step away from a biblical definition of marriage.

Here’s what we have to remember as men and women who fear God and believe his Word is our ultimate authority for every area of life. Marriage is not a political institution. It’s a divine institution (Gen 2:20-25). The state can regulate it and God-fearing people may humbly dissent on the merits of such regulation. But God has not given the state or any other human institution permission to define marriage. That’s his prerogative and his alone.

Mark Prater, the executive director of Sovereign Grace, published a blog post yesterday that provides a cogent, thoughtful perspective on how we should respond as Christians to the court decision. Read it and join me in taking his counsel to heart.

Matthew grew up attending KingsWay and joined the pastoral staff in 2009. God has blessed him and his wife, Aliza, with three rambunctious boys. Matthew did his undergraduate work at the University of Richmond in chemistry and political science, spent a year at the Sovereign Grace Pastor’s College, and received his Masters of Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
