If you’re a Christian, your identity is not defined by your marital status. Your identity is found in Jesus. You have been united with him by faith and the most important thing about you is not whether you are married or single. The most important thing about you is that you are an adopted son or daughter of the King of Kings. Marriage is not ultimate. Jesus is.

At the same time, Jesus tells us that marriage matters. It’s a living illustration of the gospel and an incredibly good gift from God. I regularly talk with single adults who are somewhere between interested and eager for marriage, but have a lot of questions.

How do I know if she’s the right person?

Is marriage really worth all the work it seems to take?

Why should I sacrifice the freedom I enjoy as a single?

A few years ago, Kingsway helped bring in Gary Thomas to speak at one of our regional marriage retreats. Gary is an engaging, honest, and biblical author, and he did a fantastic job caring for the married couples among us. That’s why I’m excited to see First Things First bring Gary back to Richmond next month  to speak from his recent book, Sacred Search: What If It’s Not about Who You Marry, But Why?

West End Assembly of God is hosting the event on Friday, August 22 at 7pm. Food trucks will be available in the parking lot at 5:30pm. If you’re a single adult, please make a priority of registering for the evening here. If you desire to get married at some point, it may very well be the best $15 you spend all year. For more information, check out this video.

Matthew grew up attending KingsWay and joined the pastoral staff in 2009. God has blessed him and his wife, Aliza, with three rambunctious boys. Matthew did his undergraduate work at the University of Richmond in chemistry and political science, spent a year at the Sovereign Grace Pastor’s College, and received his Masters of Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
