Membership in a local church is not a rite of passage for the super-Christian. It’s a biblical necessity for every Christian. Consider the words of the Apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus.

“Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” (Eph 4:15-16)

Paul deliberately uses the metaphor of a body to describe the kind of church Jesus died to save. It’s not a loose community of people who happen to attend the same Sunday meeting. It’s a defined community of people who are “joined and held together” through their commitment to Christ and one another.

Can you imagine a healthy arm existing apart from a firm, vital connection to a specific human body? Yet that is precisely what we try to be when we attempt life apart from membership in a local church. Membership isn’t about signing a paper and getting a badge. Membership is about publicly recognizing the local expression of the body of Christ that God has made you to join. Church membership isn’t optional. It’s God’s plan for Christian community.

Here’s where our Starting Point class comes in. We take a Friday night/Saturday morning to help you explore what it means to be a member of Kingsway. Attending Starting Point is a prerequisite for becoming a member of our church and is offered this fall on Nov 14-15, starting at 7:30pm on Friday evening. Registration is not required and childcare is provided on-site.

Partipants will learn about our church’s history, vision, values, and have plenty of opportunities to ask questions about Kingsway.

Matthew Williams grew up attending KingsWay and joined the pastoral staff in 2009. God has blessed him and his wife, Aliza, with three rambunctious boys, Ethan, Micah, and Tyler. Matthew did his undergraduate work at the University of Richmond in chemistry and political science, spent a year at the Sovereign Grace Pastor’s College, and is nearly finished with his Masters of Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
